I am running the currently latest macOS, Mojave 10.14.1. In the Output tab of Sound settings, the port is also shown as DisplayPort, no other options availableĪlso a bit strange, in the Sound Effects tab of the Sound settings, I can choose EPSON PJ for Play sound effects through, but Output volume is disabled. Strangely, the Audio MDID Setup app identifies my audio as DisplayPort, even though it should be HDMI. I can choose 5.1 Surround as speaker configuration, but when I test that setup, sound is only output through the two front stereo speakers. I have tried using the Audio MIDI Setup app to configure the audio. However, the sound is only 2 channel stereo. When I connect my Mac mini to the receiver, I get video to the projector and sound to the speakers. The HDMI port on 2014 and later Mac minis supports 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. The mac mini runing XBMC or similar will need to process high definitiion video files that contain Dolby and DTS True HD 8 channels bit streams and be able to pass these streams unchanged and uncompressed to the HDMI port for external decoding.

HDMI is your gateway to connecting the computer and TV since one cable does the job for sound and video. Since 2010, all Mac minis have provided an HDMI-out port. Therell be no difference in quality, and it wont cost you anything.
Seeing as the monitor probably already has a DVI cable laying around, Id just use the HDMI to DVI adapter included with the Mac Mini. I have confirmed that this is possible using alternative hardware (e.g. Now that your content is loaded, connect the Mac mini media server to your TV. The HDMI cable just also carries digital audio along with it. I have a receiver that is capable of transmitting 5.1 surround sound to my speakers, and HDMI video to my projector.
